I am interested in making pictures that link viewers to their subconscious
minds by using images that are metaphorical, universal, archetypical
or even from my own psyche. I also hope they are pleasing to the
eye. The subject may be a musician, the relationship of humans to
animals, the passage of time, pain, prayer, a pretty dress, a poignant
young man or woman, or an image from a folk tale. I like eclectic
- it is a true expression of who I am. I believe that we all possess
a deep, vast and largely untapped resource in the depths of our
brains - a resource that can teach us about our true selves, the
mystical person underneath the surface where our spirit resides.
Carl Jung said that we pass on the images of folklore that reside
in our psyche from countless generations so that even if we have
not been told the myth or story, our collective subconscious mind
recognizes it.
My influences include people who have inspired me with their art
and encouraged me to reap the rewards of taking risks. They include:
(Keith Carter (photographer) and Ed Paschke (painter), who strengthened
my work ethic by their example; Miles Davis (musician), who would
have rather done something bad than do something he'd done before;
Joseph Campbell (writer), who did my homework for me and Neil Lamper
(psychologist), who helped me trust and appreciate myself.
